A Pit Bull is not an actual breed.
We call them Pit Bulls because they are so similar however they are actually American Pit Bull Terriers, American Staffordshire Terriers, and Staffordshire Bull Terriers.
What is the difference? Not much.
The American Pit Bull Terrier, or APBT, is recognized by the American Dog Breeders Association (ADBA) and the United Kennel Club (UKC).
The American Staffordshire Terrier, or AST, is recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC).
The Staffordshire Bull Terrier, or SBT, is recognized by the AKC and the UKC.
These three breeds are essentially the same except bred for different reasons.
American Pit Bull Terrier 🐾
American Pit Bull Terrier colors are black, blue, brown, fawn, liver, red, white and brindle.
The APBT was originally bred in the 1900’s in the British Isles. Men at the time were looking for an active dog with quite a bit of “gaming” ability so they bred terriers and bulldogs. This original breed eventually gave us the three breeds that we know now, APBT, AST and SBT. They came to America with immigrants in the late 1900’s.
Through no fault of their own, dog fighting was a part of the original breeding purpose at the time. Regardless of what they were bred for, these dogs were also very well known for their companionship and love of people.
With today’s APBT, in many cases it’s know who their ancestors are. Some could be from a fighting line however many, many, many are far removed. The APBT can be dog aggressive however absolutely not human aggressive.
American Staffordshire Terrier 🐾
American Staffordshire Terrier colors are black, blue, brown, fawn, liver, red, white and brindle.
American Staffordshire colors were the same as the American Pit Bull until the mid 1930’s, when the AKC opened its breed registry to include a few American Pit Bull Terriers. This new breed was called Staffordshire Terriers. In the 1970’s, their name was changed yet again to American Staffordshire Terrier, to not confuse them with the Staffordshire Bull Terrier. The only dogs that can be called American Staffordshire Terrier are those from AKC registered bloodlines. These dogs are bred for good temperament.
Staffordshire Bull Terrier 🐾
The Staffordshire Bull Terrier, SBT, is very common in England but not so much in the US. Similar to the APBT and the AST, the Staffordshire Bull Terrier is bred for good temperament and disposition. This breed has been referred to as a “nanny dog” because of their love of children.
Still not confused?
Pit Bull Traits
A Pit bull is strong and athletic. They are extremely confident and trusting. We know they can be dog aggressive. We know they are absolutely NOT human aggressive.
We also know they are not for everyone.
To raise a Pit Bull is to take on more responsibility than you would with any other type of dog.
I hate to admit it, but whether it’s true because of the dogs themselves, or because of peoples perceptions of them, it simply doesn’t matter.
Once you take ownership of a Pit Bull, you must take ownership of everything that comes along with it.
What is a Pit Bull?
For a responsible dog owner, a Pit Bull is a special dog and a wonderful pet. You will be rewarded with years of unconditional love, daily laughs and a best friend you can’t ever replace.
