The Champions

You have heard the stories, you know what happened, however The Champions DVD focuses on the true heart of the story, the dogs.

The Champions DVD- Review

This is an amazing story about the Pit Bulls rescued from Michael Vick’s horrific fighting rings. It goes into detail about all those who stepped up to rescue, rehabilitate, and take these dogs into their homes.

In 2007, Michael Vick, then QB for the Atlanta Falcons, and two others, were indicted on Federal Felony Charges of running a multi-state dog fighting ring.

Over 50 Pit Bulls were seized, as well as dog fighting equipment and paraphernalia. Many of these dogs were injured.

Vick claimed he played no part in the actual killing of dogs by hanging, drowning and electrocution, however the polygraph said otherwise.

He ended up sentenced to 23 months on Federal Charges.

After prison, Vick picked up his NFL career playing for the New York Jets as well as the Pittsburgh Steelers, seeing protests at almost every home game.

Today, Vick is not signed with an NFL team though he says he would like to be. Many Pit Bull advocates would like to see it stay that way. (myself included)

The Champions DVD follows the lives of five dogs that were rescued from the Bad Newz Kennels- Cherry, Little Red, Handsome Dan, Mel and Jonny Justice.

Despite pressures from PETA and the Humane Society of the United States to euthanize the dogs, many people stood up to take them in, including the organizations BADRAP and Best Friends Animal Society. They proved these dogs were worth saving and the real monsters were the ones walking on two legs.

Watching these dogs learn to trust humans again is a heartwarming and heartbreaking experience.

This film also highlights breed discrimination towards Pit Bulls by introducing us to Mark Buehrle, a Professional baseball player. Mark faced BSL in Miami as well as Toronto. His family ultimately decided to live apart during the season.

This is a story of second chances, redemption, hope and healing.

With all the myths that surround Pit Bulls, you will learn things you didn’t know, I guarantee it.

I cannot recommend this enough!
